Naval Heroes

Rear Admiral
James H. Barnard

Unsung Hero

by Vaughn Aubuchon

In 1962, at the age of 18, I escaped the religious tyranny of my father in St. Helens, Oregon, by driving my 1955 Chevy down to San Mateo, CA, to establish a new residence, and avoid the constant reminder of eternal damnation in the lake of fire (Evangelical).

When I first arrived, I had no place to stay, so I lived in the Sears parking lot next to Edison St., just across from the Hillsdale Garden Apartments, where I had lived briefly in 1961.

For a week or so, I slept on the couch of the Barnard family on Hillsdale Blvd. During that time, I had several interesting conversations with Admiral Barnard.

What I Learned

War takes a heavy toll, even when you are unscathed physically. Watching the bodies flying from torpedo explosions that you have just fired is a life-altering experience. Some never recover.

Never believe anything your government tells you.

One of the math exercises he gave me -
"It is now 12:00:00. At exactly what time will the 2 hands of the clock again be coincident?"
Not as easy as it first appears.

I believe he is not listed here -
Active Naval Personalities of WWII
because he had not achieved rank
when on submarine duty.

I am happy that I was able to meet Admiral Barnard. I wished I would have talked to him more. He was a fountain of WWII knowledge.

Many thanks to J. T. McDaniel, webmaster at fleetsubmarine.com for the information he has provided.
