"New" Charnock Road School (at Sepulveda Blvd.) - 1959 to Present (45 years)
(I remember the corner as a big Victorian mansion, set far back on a huge lot.)
Located in the "Westside Village" section west of Palms, CA
That would be "West of Palms", NOT East of Mar Vista, as
George Garrigues notes.
Yo, George! I'm with you all the way!

(Would anyone like to help me out here? Contact I would like to fill in all the names.)
Many thanks to Christine Atwood for the info.

I particularly remember marbles with Louie, football with Paul, tether ball with Stan, the Culver City mall with Dennis,
writing poetry and word puzzles with Jean Ann, and riding the bus to Hamilton High with Michael in 1960.
Where's Rodney and Virginia Magnor, Cay Beaver (pseudonym), David Keep (and the egg escapades), Frank Duoflinger ?
I remember many a Saturday matinee at the Palms Theater on Motor Ave. at Venice Blvd.,
run by Jim Allan and Actor Merritt Stone.
"Dark, slender and gaunt MERRITT STONE played the spider-eaten dad Pete Flynn
in 313-EARTH VS. THE SPIDER; a clergyman in 414-TORMENTED;
a consoling cop (uncredited) near the end of 319-WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST;
and the wigged king in 411-THE MAGIC SWORD". . . . from MST 3000.)

Most of these students went to Palms Junior High School, on Palms Blvd. (formerly Ocean Park Blvd.)
between Sepulveda Blvd. and Overland Ave.,
which swallowed and leveled the old Charnock Road School shown above (now a playing field),
Most then continued on to
Hamilton High on Robertson Blvd., between Pico Blvd. and National Blvd.,
where I spent the 10th grade in 1960.
My Mom had Mr. Luce for 10th grade English - so did I.
My Mom had Mrs. Hadley for 10th grade geometry - so did I.

Donna's former house sat smack-dab in the middle of the soon-to-be 405 (San Diego Freeway).
After it was stripped and abandoned, I helped destroy it.
The ceramic top of a toilet came flying through a plate glass window, and hit me on the head.
Now you understand why I am this way. Ha!
Mom never knew.

The First Southern California Shopping Mall - Culver Center, circa 1955
Culver Center- Culver City - 1955
The caption reads: "A scene from Thieves Market In Years Past - Excitement Galore!!"
The idiot with the finger in his nose is me, apparently expecting a flood (pants cuff), with Dennis Hall on my left.
On the left, I see a Market Basket, a Torrey Jewelers and a New Yorkers Bakery.
On the right, W.T. Grants, and Berlands.
Anyone remember the street name? Other store names?

Dan Holloway kindly writes (11-09-04) -
"Saw your cool photo of Culver Center on your site, I believe the street name was Culver Center Dr.? Some other Stores I remember are:

Thrifty Drugs

Bank of America

F.W. Woolworth

Tom McCan Shoes

Charleston's Women's Clothes

Mode-O-Day Women's Clothes

Culver Center Department Store

Martin's Music

Learner's Men' Clothes

Sears

Hardey's Shoes

The Surprise Store

Curries Ice Cream

Ships Restaurant

Culver Stationary

Barber Shop

Shoe Repair

Wellington Drugs

McMans Furniture

Household Finance

Culver Florist

Ha-ha-ha! There you have it.
How's that for memory! Many thanks, Dan.

Garrett Belmont writes about Hacienda Drive, in another
Old Culver Center Businesses List at the official Culver City website, in the history section.

This is where I used to fire my clothespin match-gun from my cruising J.C. Higgins bike (Sears).
With two common clothesline clothes pins, a knife, and a rubber band,
you could make a matchstick gun, which fired and lit the match, at the same time.
Never set anything on fire, but then, that wasn't really the intent ... it was just cool.
Added note: I have determined that Diamond Match is now a total stick match monopoly,
after having purchased Ohio Match. Result: the matches are terrible,
and will not light in the match gun . . . game over.
NOTHING is as it was!

Remember the RollerDrome on Washington Place (Blvd.)? Adohr Farms dairy trucks? Helms Bakery Trucks?

 Hillsdale High School Knights,
 San Mateo, CA
I lived at 118 W. Hillsdale Blvd., in the Hillsdale Garden Apartments. Later, I lived with the Fisher family, at the same address.
March 2006 - I bought a 1961 HHS Shield yearbook on eBay!
It turned out to be RON FISHER's! But, I'm not in it. Yet I remember the photo sitting on 19th Avenue - bureaucratic error, I guess.

On the one hand, I was happy to get the yearbook; on the other, I hope that this does not signal the demise of Ron. I'm afraid it might. I haven't spoken with Ron for 44 years, not his sister Adria Fisher. Nor Greg (teacher), nor Paula Fisher (boy, she sure could belt out Mellisonde (sp?) (church operatic singer). She is instantly remembered, everytime I see Bea Arthur, her "spittin-image", as I recall. Just as tall, too.

 Dick Vermeil, famous football coach, started here;
He was the football and basketball coach.
Ron Fisher, Louis Schick, Mike Young,
Rick Schweiger, Greg Strong, Kris Cavalli,
 Jamie Barnard, Barbara Lucy,
 Joan and John White

1962
12th

 St.Helens Senior High School,
 St.Helens, OR
I lived on Aubuchon Drive (my dad Fred was a developer/ subdivider/ builder - still fixing up houses at age 85 in Ontario, OR).

Charnock Road School - Old Location
In the background is Palms Junior High School in 1987.
The old Charnock Road School was situated on the grass field.
Below I have tried to recreate the building layout at the school in 1956.
The layout is approximate - the memories are fading.
