New Apple iMac -
Migration Issues Nightmare
by Vaughn Aubuchon

HERE is a brief summary of the issues that I have encountered in trying to move my Mac computer stuff to my new 2014 27" iMac.
.
All my old stuff is on my FW-800 PPC Mac (2003).

Introduction

1

Think Patience!

2

Do NOT think that you will EASILY replace your old computer with your new one.

3

Expect to maintain 2 systems for some time to come, in order for your transition to be successful and complete.

4

Try not to be too anxious to migrate from old to new.
For me, from a FW-800 (2003 PPC) to a 27" iMac (2014 Intel).
Migration Assistant is USELESS here, due to the age difference.

5

Migration MUST be MANUAL, and studied in detail before attempting.

Reasons to Maintain Your
Old Legacy System

NO! Old Internet speed and functionality will SUCK.

1

Your old applications will continue work just fine, and cost you ZERO.
- Use old MS Office, Photoshop 5

2

Many of us love an old application dearly, for which there is really no GOOD replacement. I have several from OS9.
And we don't want to let go. DON'T.

New iMac Requirements

YES! New Internet speed and functionality is superior.

1

New iMac will require NEW versions of many pieces of software.
This will be very expensive.
Some will have steep new learning curves.

2

Getting new drivers is a hassle - printer, scanner, etc.

3

Must buy new "Suites" - MS Office 2011, PS CS6, etc.

4

The damned Apple "Magic" wireless mouse WON'T CLICK WITHOUT SCROLLING UPWARD.
It will drive you crazy, chasing your "click target" up the page.
It is virtually unusable.

I was forced to return to my old wired USB mouse to make the system usable. Once again, unbridled cleverness is substituted for usability.

SOLVED
with
MagicPrefs

5

Old computer does NOT have Thunderbolt.
New computer does NOT have Firewire 800.

Must buy a $29
Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adapter.
Just don't try to use it with ANY device that requires power - it does NOT supply sufficient power to run external drives. Many users have claimed this.

There is NO IP6600D driver for Mavericks. A poster on the Apple forum said that the IP6700D driver works. He was right.

1. The security capchas are UNREADABLE.
2. The second set they give you are readable.
3. Download takes 10 minutes on cable
4. NO indication of download except router
5. File does NOT "appear on desktop"
6. Dig it out of your downloads folder

NOTES:

Installing Mavericks

In order to get Numbers and Pages, Mavericks is required. That is why I installed it. I wish I hadn't -
1. Much is STILL missing from Mavericks (Canon drivers, etc.)
2. Which were NOT missing from Mountain Lion.
3. Numbers and Pages have the WORST reviews I have ever seen - these are essentially garbage apps, with most features removed from the original iWork bundle. When you see MORE 1-star reviews than 5-star reviews, what does that tell you? PLENTY!
.

-

iWork Versions
Earlier versions of iWork had many more features. You may want to try one of them.
Apple has DROPPED the original iWork name and bundle. You can still buy iWork '09 on Amazon and eBay.
.

Late Adoption
There are BIG advantages to being a "Late Adopter" (me).
1. Let others screw around with beta versions and half-baked junk.
2. I like to USE a computer - not endlessly screw around with a computer.
... Which is why I abandoned the PC 28 years ago, when the Mac was introduced.
... PCs were a pain in the a$$ 20 years ago - and they STILL are. Price, installation, bloated functionality, idiotic defaults, lack of elegance, support hassles, etc.
.

MBP = MacBook Pro
.

Old/ New Systems Compatibility
See my page on Mac OS Migration, and how Apple wiped out my files with their Time Capsule. The second radio frequency they added to Airport BLOWS UP Tiger completely. Screwing up your legacy system is not a concern of Apple. BEWARE! If you do not buy all the latest Apple stuff, you get screwed, by Apple, without comment. No "I'm sorry", no nothing. Just, "We can't hear you". They know all about the issue, but choose to remain silent. It is all going in the book.
